The Community Assignment: Serving the Underserved With Respect and Dignity
Every time I take that mandatory shower and enjoy the precious gift that a change of clothing affords me, or indulge in daily meals, I cannot help but think that there are others in the world or even in the communities we serve, who do not have the means to enjoy the very basic necessities of life, and that concerns me a lot!
For me, even getting up in the morning to experience these and many more simple joys of life is such a huge blessing, coupled with being alive and healthy. What great gifts from God that I will never take for granted! Even in rough and perilous times, so many of us are able to afford the bare necessities in life for our families and even share with our friends because of the abundance God has blessed us with.
As a graduate from New York Theological Seminary (NYTS), earning my Master of Divinity (MDIV) solidified my innate passion for helping the underserved feel better about themselves. I believe this is my calling, which I intend to fulfill daily by being intentional with my words and actions to also inspire others to join me in this mission.
The first course of action is based on my genuine care for my homeless brothers and sisters who are having a more difficult time especially since the COVID-19 pandemic began. I want them to experience the same basic needs like a shower, a change of clothing, meals and a place to live while they hold on to hope. I want their lives made easier through access to the same basic necessities that my own family and I enjoy.
I am reaching out to you to join me in supporting the homeless in my community so that they can get to shower more often, have a change of clean clothing, and some food. This way, they may be motivated to keep fighting and surviving from one day to the next.
It is up to you and me to make a collective effort to reinforce and strengthen our community. Therefore, all of your contributions are most welcome and will go towards transforming lives. Many thanks in advance for your support.
Sincerely,
Ramona Sargeant, M.Div.
